The ancient Greeks believed that our destinies were assigned to us at birth by three sister goddesses of fate - the "Moirai" - who were seamstresses. 

Clotho ("the Spinner") spun out the thread of life, Lakhesis (the "Allotter") measured the thread, and Atropos ("the Unturnable") cut the thread short.

We mortals could exercise free will without undue interference but if we went too far astray, the sisters would avail themselves and redirect our course.
